Minbar

A raised pulpit in a mosque, traditionally used by the imam to deliver sermons, especially the Friday sermon. Its steps and elevated seat make the preacher visible to the congregation.

Khutbah: A formal Islamic sermon delivered as part of communal worship, especially at Friday prayer. The khutbah is the speech for which the minbar is most characteristically used.
Muhammad: The religious and political leader of the early Muslim community, regarded by Muslims as the final prophet. Tradition associates the first minbar with Muhammad’s preaching in Medina.
Cairo Minbar of Saladin: A celebrated wooden minbar made for the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem under Saladin’s patronage. Its intricate inlay shows the craftsmanship lavished on important mosque pulpits.
Dikka: A raised platform in some mosques used by a caller or reciter to relay prayers and readings to the congregation. Unlike the minbar, a dikka supports recitation or prayer responses rather than the sermon.
Imam: A person who leads Muslim congregational prayer and may perform other religious duties. The imam commonly delivers the sermon from the minbar.
Prophet's Mosque: A mosque in Medina established by Muhammad and among Islam’s holiest sites. Its early congregation used the pulpit that later minbars recall.
Minbar of the Great Mosque of Kairouan: An early medieval wooden minbar preserved in the Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunisia. It is a notable surviving example of a historic mosque minbar.
Maqsura: An enclosed or screened area in a mosque, historically reserved for a ruler or other high-ranking person. A maqsura is a protected space, not a preaching platform.
Jumu'ah: The weekly Friday congregational prayer observed by Muslims, including a sermon before the prayer. The minbar is especially associated with the sermon at this weekly gathering.
Saqifah: A covered meeting place in Medina where leaders selected Abu Bakr as Muhammad’s successor in 632. Historical accounts describe Abu Bakr addressing the community from Muhammad’s minbar after his selection.
