Mine reclamation

Mine reclamation stabilizes and rehabilitates land disturbed by mining, addressing hazards and pollution and, in some projects, restoring ecological functions.

Mine closure: The planned shutdown of a mine, including decommissioning facilities and addressing environmental and social obligations. Reclamation is a central part of the work required when mining operations end.
Coal mine reclamation: The rehabilitation of land disturbed by coal extraction and related waste disposal. Coal mining often leaves extensive spoil, subsidence, and altered drainage to address.
Mine reclamation bond: A financial guarantee intended to cover the cost of reclaiming a mine if its operator fails to do so. Bond adequacy determines whether funds may exist for unfinished reclamation.
Mine closure planning: The planning of a mine's shutdown, rehabilitation, monitoring, and transition to post-mining uses. Early planning can make closure targets realistic and reclamation easier to verify.
Acid mine drainage: Acidic, metal-rich water produced when sulfide minerals react with air and water. Reclamation must prevent or treat this persistent source of contamination.

Mountaintop removal mining: A form of surface coal mining that removes mountain summits to reach underlying coal seams. Its large-scale terrain changes create difficult reclamation questions.
