Mineral wool

Mineral wool is a fibrous insulating material made by spinning or drawing molten rock, slag, or glass into fine strands. Its porous structure traps air, limiting heat flow and sound transmission.

Thermal conductivity: Thermal conductivity measures how readily a material transfers heat. Mineral wool’s trapped air and tangled fibers reduce heat transfer.
Rock wool: Rock wool is mineral wool made primarily from molten natural rock, often basalt. It is the rock-based branch of the broader mineral-wool family.
Building insulation: Building insulation reduces heat transfer through roofs, walls, floors, and other parts of a building. Mineral wool is widely installed in building envelopes to limit heat loss and gain.
Fiberglass: Fiberglass is a material made from fine glass fibers, used in insulation and reinforced composites. It overlaps with glass wool but also names broader glass-fiber products.
Sound absorption: Sound absorption is the conversion of acoustic energy into heat or other nonreflected energy. Air movement through mineral wool fibers dissipates sound energy.
Slag wool: Slag wool is mineral wool made primarily from molten industrial slag. It shows how mineral wool can use a metallurgical by-product as feedstock.
Acoustic insulation: Acoustic insulation reduces sound transmission or reverberation using materials and construction assemblies. Mineral wool is used in walls and ceilings to absorb sound within cavities.
Cellulose insulation: Cellulose insulation is loose-fill or dense-packed insulation made mainly from recycled paper fibers. It is a combustible plant-fiber alternative, unlike mineral wool’s inorganic fibers.
Fiberization: Fiberization is the conversion of a material into fine, elongated strands. Spinning or drawing molten feedstock creates mineral wool’s insulating fibers.
Glass wool: Glass wool is a fibrous insulating material made from molten glass or silica-rich materials. It shares mineral wool’s fibrous form but uses glass-based feedstock.
