Knowra Mining Mining Mining is the extraction of minerals, metals, and other geological materials from the Earth. It ranges from small-scale excavation to large industrial operations.
Open-pit mining : A surface-mining method that removes ore from a large, stepped excavation. It extracts deposits near the surface by progressively enlarging an open excavation.
Mineral deposit : A natural concentration of minerals formed by geological processes. Mining begins where geological processes have concentrated material in a potentially useful deposit.
Copper mining : The extraction and processing of copper-bearing ores and deposits. Copper production illustrates the scale and waste involved in supplying a widely used industrial metal.
Mine tailings : The finely ground waste left after valuable minerals are separated from mined ore. Tailings storage can pose long-lived risks through dam failure, dust, or contaminant release.
Quarrying : The extraction of stone, sand, or similar materials from an open excavation. Quarrying often overlaps with mining but commonly targets construction materials in surface pits.
Underground mining : Mining that reaches deposits through shafts, tunnels, or other underground workings. It accesses deep deposits without removing the entire overlying surface.
Ore : Rock or sediment containing valuable minerals that can be extracted at a profit under specified conditions. Ore is the material a mine seeks to recover, defined by both geology and economics.
Coal mining : The extraction of coal from surface or underground deposits. Coal mining supplies fuel and industrial feedstock while creating distinctive land and health impacts.
Acid mine drainage : Acidic, metal-rich water produced when sulfide minerals react with air and water. Exposed sulfide rock can pollute streams long after mining has stopped.
Drilling : The creation of a hole in the ground using a rotating or percussive tool. Drilling can explore or reach resources, but by itself does not describe their extraction.
