Mir Taqi Mir

Mir Taqi Mir (1723–1810) was an Indian poet whose Urdu ghazals helped establish the classical tradition of Urdu poetry. His work is known for its emotional intensity and idiomatic language.

Ghazal: A lyric poem composed of autonomous couplets linked by rhyme and often a recurring refrain. This is the poetic form most closely associated with Mir’s literary achievement.
Delhi Sultanate: A series of Muslim dynasties that ruled much of northern India from Delhi between 1206 and 1526. Its older courtly world formed part of the region’s literary inheritance, though it ended before Mir’s lifetime.
Wali Deccani: A seventeenth-century Urdu poet whose work helped establish the ghazal as a literary form in northern India. His earlier example helped prepare the literary ground on which Mir became preeminent.
Kulliyat-e-Mir: The collected poetic works of Mir Taqi Mir, including his Urdu ghazals and other verse. This collected corpus is the primary source for studying the range of Mir’s poetry.

Sauda: Mirza Muhammad Rafi Sauda was an eighteenth-century Urdu poet famed for satire and panegyric. A leading contemporary, Sauda offers a contrast to Mir’s inward, elegiac poetic voice.
Zikr-e-Mir: Mir Taqi Mir’s autobiographical prose account, written in Persian and known through later translation. It offers Mir’s own account of his life, literary world, and displacement.
Delhi in Urdu poetry: The changing city of Delhi as represented in Urdu poetry across successive political and cultural eras. Mir’s verse preserves the emotional memory of a city damaged by upheaval.
