Misorientation

Misorientation is the relative rotation between the crystallographic orientations of two grains or crystal regions, commonly described by a rotation angle and axis.

Grain boundary: An interface separating two crystals or grains with different crystallographic orientations. A grain boundary is where the misorientation between neighboring grains is realized.
Crystallographic orientation: The alignment of a crystal’s lattice axes with a chosen reference frame. Misorientation compares two crystallographic orientations.
Texture (crystallography): The statistical distribution of crystallographic orientations in a polycrystalline material. Texture influences the orientation pairs available to form boundaries.
Low-angle grain boundary: A grain boundary with a small misorientation, often modeled as an array of dislocations. It is a boundary class defined by small misorientation.
Axis–angle representation: A representation of a three-dimensional rotation by an axis and an angle around that axis. Misorientation is commonly specified by this rotation description.
Crystal system: A classification of crystals into seven groups based on their unit-cell geometry and symmetry. Crystal-system symmetry affects which rotation descriptions are equivalent.
Grain growth: The enlargement of grains in a polycrystalline material as grain boundaries migrate. Misorientation can affect boundary mobility and thus grain-growth behavior.
High-angle grain boundary: A grain boundary with a comparatively large misorientation and a structure not described by a simple dislocation array. It contrasts with low-angle boundaries in both rotation magnitude and atomic structure.
Euler angles: Three parameters that specify the orientation of a rigid body or coordinate frame. Orientation measurements expressed as Euler angles can be combined to calculate misorientation.
Point group: The set of symmetry operations that leave an object or crystal structure unchanged around a fixed point. Crystal point-group symmetry reduces distinct misorientations to symmetry-inequivalent cases.
