Mississippi River Delta

The sediment-built landform in southeastern Louisiana where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico. It comprises shifting wetlands, distributary channels, and coastal lobes shaped by river flow, sediment supply, and sea-level change.

Delta lobe: A protruding part of a delta built as a river channel deposits sediment into a receiving basin. Successive lobes record how the Mississippi built land as its channel shifted toward the Gulf.
Mississippi River: A major North American river that drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Its water and sediment supply created the delta and continue to shape it.
