Mississippi River

The Mississippi River is a major North American river flowing about 2,340 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It forms the central channel of one of the continent’s largest drainage systems.

Mississippi River watershed: The land area drained by the Mississippi River and its tributaries, spanning much of the central United States. This vast drainage area supplies the river’s flow from the Rockies to the Appalachians.
Glacial Lake Agassiz: A vast proglacial lake that occupied parts of central North America as the last ice sheet retreated. Its drainage helped establish routes and landscapes shaping the upper Mississippi basin.
Louis Jolliet: A French-Canadian explorer who traveled the Mississippi River with Jacques Marquette in 1673. Their voyage documented the river’s course and informed French claims in the region.

Laurentide Ice Sheet: A continental ice sheet that covered much of Canada and the northern United States during the last glacial period. Its retreat reshaped upper-basin drainage and left the Great Lakes and glacial lakes.
Sauk people: An Indigenous people of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley, also known as the Sac. Sauk communities lived along the river and resisted forced removal from ancestral lands.
Port of New Orleans: A major seaport on the lower Mississippi River, linking inland waterways with international maritime trade. Its position at the river mouth connects the agricultural interior to global shipping.
New Madrid earthquakes: A series of powerful earthquakes in 1811–1812 centered near New Madrid in the Mississippi Valley. The earthquakes altered local landforms and river channels, dramatizing the valley’s geological activity.
