Mississippi

Mississippi is a U.S. state in the Deep South, bordered by the Mississippi River to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.

Mississippi Territory: A United States territory established in 1798 that preceded the states of Mississippi and Alabama. The territory became Mississippi when it entered the Union in 1817.
Mississippi River: A major North American river that drains a vast basin into the Gulf of Mexico. It forms Mississippi's western boundary and has linked the state to inland trade.
William Faulkner: An American novelist whose fiction often portrays the history and society of the U.S. South. His invented Yoknapatawpha County was modeled on Lafayette County, Mississippi.
Mississippi Freedom Summer: A 1964 campaign to register Black voters and establish Freedom Schools in Mississippi. The campaign brought national attention to violence and voter suppression in the state.
