Mit’a

Mit’a was a system of compulsory communal labor used by Andean states, including the Inca Empire. Communities supplied workers for state projects and obligations in rotation.

Ayllu: An Andean kin-based community that organized land, labor, and mutual obligations. Ayllus were the local communities from which states drew mit’a workers.
Wari Empire: A powerful Andean state centered in the central highlands of Peru, flourishing roughly from the sixth to tenth centuries. Wari state organization provides an earlier setting for large-scale Andean labor mobilization.
Pachacuti: An Inca ruler traditionally credited with transforming Cusco into the center of an expanding empire in the fifteenth century. Imperial expansion under Pachacuti increased the demands placed on incorporated communities.
Potosí: A high-altitude Bolivian city whose Cerro Rico silver deposit became a major center of Spanish colonial mining. The colonial mita sent Indigenous workers to the mines of Cerro Rico.
Inca road system: A network of roads and associated infrastructure linking regions of the Inca Empire. Mit’a labor built and maintained routes that carried officials, armies, and goods.
Tiwanaku: A major pre-Inca society centered near Lake Titicaca, influential across the south-central Andes. Its regional reach offers another pre-Inca context for organized communal obligations.
Manco Inca Yupanqui: An Inca ruler who led resistance against Spanish rule after the conquest of Cusco. His rebellion unfolded as Spanish authorities began seizing control of Inca institutions and labor.
Cerro Rico: A mountain beside Potosí, mined extensively for silver under Spanish colonial rule. Its mines became the best-known destination of the colonial labor draft.
Terrace farming: Agriculture on stepped fields constructed across slopes to conserve soil and water. State labor obligations could build and maintain agricultural terraces.
Inca Empire: A Andean empire that expanded from Cusco and ruled much of western South America before Spanish conquest. The empire adapted mit’a into a major means of mobilizing labor across conquered territories.
