King of Pontus from about 120 to 63 BCE, Mithridates VI built a powerful Black Sea empire and fought three wars against Rome.

First Mithridatic War: The conflict fought between Mithridates VI and Rome from 89 to 85 BCE. Mithridates’s initial invasion of Roman Asia began the series of wars with Rome.
Kingdom of Pontus: A Hellenistic kingdom on the southern Black Sea coast, ruled by the Mithridatic dynasty. It was the kingdom Mithridates inherited and expanded into a regional empire.
