Mithridatic Wars

The three wars fought between the Roman Republic and Mithridates VI of Pontus from 89 to 63 BCE, as Rome contested Pontic power in Anatolia.

Mithridates VI Eupator: The king of Pontus who resisted Roman expansion and fought Rome in three wars. His ambitions and strategies drove the conflict across Anatolia and the eastern Mediterranean.
Kingdom of Pontus: A Hellenistic kingdom on the southern Black Sea coast, ruled by the Mithridatic dynasty. Pontus supplied the kingdom, resources, and strategic position behind Mithridates' resistance to Rome.
Lucius Cornelius Sulla: A Roman general and politician who commanded against Mithridates during the First Mithridatic War. His campaign recaptured Greece and forced Mithridates to accept a settlement in 85 BCE.
Pompey's eastern settlement: The reorganization of Roman territories and client kingdoms in the East after Pompey's campaigns in 64–63 BCE. It converted the final victory over Mithridates into a durable Roman political order.

Nicomedes IV of Bithynia: The last king of Bithynia, who bequeathed his kingdom to Rome. His succession and Rome's claim to Bithynia brought the rival powers into renewed conflict.
