Mittelland Canal

The Mittelland Canal is a major inland waterway across northern Germany, linking the Rhine and western canal network with the Elbe and eastern waterways.

Weser River: A major river in northwestern Germany flowing north to the North Sea. The canal crosses the Weser near Minden through an elevated aqueduct.
Friedrich the Great: King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786, known for military campaigns and state reforms. Prussian-era plans for a cross-country canal prefigured the later waterway.
Inland waterway transport: The movement of people and goods by vessels on rivers, canals, and lakes. The canal is a central freight route in Germany’s inland waterway system.

Elbe Lateral Canal: A German canal linking the Mittelland Canal with the Elbe near Lüneburg. It extends the canal network eastward toward the lower Elbe.
Hermann von Budde: A Prussian officer and politician who served as minister of public works. He supported the canal project during its early twentieth-century development.
Rhine–Herne Canal: A canal connecting the Rhine near Duisburg with the Dortmund–Ems Canal in western Germany. This western route links the Mittelland Canal to the Rhine at its Duisburg end.
Hanover: The capital of Lower Saxony in northern Germany, located on the Mittelland Canal. The canal strengthened Hanover’s position as a transport and logistics center.
Dortmund–Ems Canal: A canal connecting the Dortmund area with the Ems River in northwestern Germany. This west–north route serves a different corridor and joins the Mittelland Canal.
