Mitzvah

A mitzvah is a commandment in Jewish tradition and, in common usage, a virtuous deed. Jewish sources describe commandments as obligations that shape religious practice and ethical life.

Torah: The foundational Jewish teaching and scripture, especially the Five Books of Moses. The Torah is the primary textual source for many commandments.
Shabbat: The Jewish day of rest, observed from Friday evening to Saturday night. Its restrictions and rituals put commandments into weekly practice.
Ten Commandments: A set of biblical laws presented in Exodus and Deuteronomy as part of the covenant at Sinai. They are among the best-known scriptural commandments.
Minhag: A Jewish custom or established communal practice that may carry religious authority without being a biblical commandment. Custom can guide practice without having the same status as a mitzvah.
Halakha: The collective body of Jewish law and practice developed from scripture and rabbinic interpretation. Halakha interprets how commandments govern daily life.
Kashrut: The body of Jewish dietary laws governing permitted foods and their preparation. Dietary commandments make religious obligation part of ordinary meals.
Covenant (biblical): A binding relationship established by agreement between God and people in the Hebrew Bible. Jewish commandments are understood within the covenant between God and Israel.
Neder: A personal vow in Jewish law that can create a binding obligation through speech. A vow creates an obligation by personal undertaking rather than a received commandment.
Talmud: A foundational collection of rabbinic discussions of Jewish law, ethics, customs, and biblical interpretation. Its debates examine the meaning and application of commandments.
Tefillin: Small leather boxes containing Torah passages, traditionally worn during weekday morning prayer. Wearing tefillin fulfills a specific positive commandment.
