Mobbing (animal behavior)

Mobbing is coordinated harassment of a predator by prey animals, often involving alarm calls, close approaches, or attacks. It can drive predators away and warn others of danger.

Predator inspection: An animal’s close approach to a potential predator to gather information about its identity or threat. Inspection can precede mobbing by revealing whether a predator poses an immediate threat.
Eurasian blackbird: A common European thrush that gives alarm calls and joins groups mobbing predators. Blackbirds provide a familiar example of social birds confronting an owl or other predator.
Konrad Lorenz: An Austrian zoologist who helped establish ethology as the study of animal behavior. Lorenz’s work helped frame conspicuous predator-directed behavior as a subject for systematic study.
Thanatosis: A defensive response in which an animal becomes motionless and appears dead. Thanatosis avoids confrontation, whereas mobbing actively approaches or harasses a predator.

Batesian mimicry: A form of mimicry in which a harmless species resembles a harmful or unpalatable one. Mimicry deters attack through resemblance rather than collective harassment.
Dilution effect: A reduction in an individual’s risk of being attacked as group size increases. Joining a mob may spread the risk of a predator’s counterattack across many animals.
Meerkat: A social mongoose that uses alarm calls and group responses to manage predator threats. Meerkats show how a group-living mammal can combine warning with collective defense.
