Mobile network operator

A company that owns or operates the infrastructure for a cellular network and sells mobile communication services to subscribers.

Radio access network: The base stations and related equipment that connect mobile devices to a cellular network. It provides the radio link between subscribers and the operator’s wider network.
Mobile telecommunications: Communication services delivered over wireless networks to mobile devices. It is the broader service domain in which operators work.
Mobile radio telephone: A two-way radio communication system connecting mobile users through base stations or switching centers. It preceded cellular networks and their modern operator model.
Universal service: A policy goal of making essential communication services available to people across a population. Coverage obligations can require operators to serve less profitable areas.
Mobile core network: The central systems that authenticate subscribers, route traffic, and manage mobile services. It handles connections and services beyond the radio access network.
Mobile broadband: Internet access delivered to devices through cellular radio networks. It is a core service operators sell alongside voice and messaging.
Cellular network: A wireless network divided into geographic cells, each served by radio equipment. The cellular architecture made large-scale mobile service practical.
Digital divide: Unequal access to digital technologies and the skills or resources needed to use them. Differences in operator coverage and affordability contribute to unequal access.
Cell site: A location containing radio equipment that serves mobile devices in a geographic area. Operators deploy cell sites to provide coverage and capacity.
International roaming: A service allowing a mobile subscriber to use networks outside the subscriber’s home operator’s coverage area. Operators arrange partner access so subscribers can stay connected abroad.
