Mobile operating system

System software that manages a mobile device’s hardware and resources while providing a platform for applications and user interaction.

Linux kernel: The core of the Linux operating system, managing hardware, memory, processes, and communication between software components. Android uses a Linux kernel to manage device hardware and system processes.
Android: A mobile operating system developed by Google and based on the Linux kernel. Android is the most widely deployed mobile operating-system family.
Smartphone: A mobile phone with an advanced operating system, internet access, and support for applications. Smartphones are the main devices built around mobile operating systems.
PDA: A handheld computer designed for personal organization and basic information management. PDAs established many handheld software conventions that mobile operating systems later expanded.
Application programming interface: A defined set of rules through which software components communicate and use one another’s services. Mobile operating systems expose APIs that let apps use system features consistently.
iOS: Apple’s mobile operating system for the iPhone. iOS is the principal alternative to Android in the smartphone market.
Tablet computer: A portable computer with a touchscreen interface, typically larger than a smartphone. Tablets use mobile operating systems to adapt apps and interfaces to larger screens.
Symbian: A mobile operating system widely used on smartphones before Android and iOS dominated. Symbian was a major smartphone platform during the transition from phones to app-capable devices.
Mobile device management: Software and policies for configuring, monitoring, and securing mobile devices in organizations. Operating-system controls let administrators enforce device policies and manage work apps.
HarmonyOS: An operating-system family developed by Huawei for phones and other connected devices. HarmonyOS is a distinct mobile platform developed outside the Android and iOS ecosystems.
