Mobile phone

A portable telephone that communicates with a cellular network by radio. Modern mobile phones commonly support messaging, internet access, cameras, and software applications.

Cellular network: A radio communications system divided into cells, each served by a base station connected to a wider network. Mobile phones connect through nearby cells, which hand service between base stations as devices move.
Smartphone: A mobile phone with an advanced operating system that runs applications and provides internet-based services. It is the computing-rich form of mobile phone used by most people today.
Mobile radio telephone: A telephone system that uses radio to connect mobile users, often through vehicle-mounted or portable equipment. These early systems established radio telephony before cellular networks became widespread.
Short Message Service: A mobile communications service for sending and receiving text messages over cellular networks. SMS made brief text communication a standard phone function.
Mobile phone addiction: A pattern of compulsive mobile phone use that interferes with daily activities or well-being. Constant access can encourage habitual checking and difficult-to-control use.
Base transceiver station: Radio equipment that sends and receives signals between mobile devices and a cellular network. It provides the local radio link between a phone and its serving cell.
Feature phone: A mobile phone with basic calling and messaging functions and a limited set of additional features. It shows that mobile phones need not have smartphone software or broad app support.
Martin Cooper: An American engineer who led Motorola's development of the first handheld mobile phone prototype. He made the first public handheld cellular call in 1973.
Mobile internet: Internet access delivered to portable devices through cellular or other wireless networks. It extends the phone from voice communications to web services and online information.
Digital divide: The unequal access to digital technologies and the skills or resources needed to use them. Phone ownership and mobile coverage shape who can participate in digital services.
