Modelling clay

Modelling clay is a pliable material shaped by hand or tools into models, sculptures, and other forms. It may be oil-based, water-based, or polymer-based, with properties suited to different uses.

Plasticine: An oil-based modelling clay that remains pliable and does not dry out in air. Its non-drying behavior makes it a standard choice for reusable models and animation.
Sculpture: Three-dimensional art made by shaping, assembling, or carving material. Modelling clay is a direct medium for building sculptural forms by hand.
Kneading: Repeated pressing and folding used to make a material more uniform and workable. Kneading softens clay and distributes its components before detailed shaping.
Play-Doh: A soft, water-based modeling compound designed primarily for children’s play. It is usually reused while moist, whereas many modelling clays are chosen for durable finished objects.
Polymer clay: A plastic-based modelling material that hardens when heated in an oven. It offers a durable, fine-detail alternative to clays that air-dry.
Stop-motion animation: Animation made by photographing physical objects in successive poses. Non-drying clay figures can be reshaped slightly between frames.
Armature (sculpture): A hidden supporting framework used to hold the shape of a sculpture. Large or projecting clay forms may need internal support against sagging.
Modeling wax: A moldable wax material used for sculpting, pattern making, and dental work. Wax is often more heat-sensitive and less clay-like in its working behavior.
Air-dry clay: A water-based modelling material that hardens as its moisture evaporates in air. Its drying process determines how forms must be finished and stored.
Claymation: Stop-motion animation made with deformable clay figures or sets. It uses modelling clay’s ability to hold a pose and change shape repeatedly.
