Modeling

Modeling is the process of forming pliable material by adding, pressing, or reshaping it. It produces a three-dimensional form while the material remains workable.

Pinching (ceramics): A ceramic hand-building technique that forms a vessel by pressing and thinning clay between the fingers and thumb. Pinching shapes clay through localized pressure rather than added material.
Clay: A fine-grained natural earth material that becomes plastic when wet and hardens when dried or fired. Clay is the most familiar material for modeling because it holds forms while workable.
Ceramic art: Artworks made from clay and other ceramic materials, often shaped and hardened by firing. Modeling is a direct way to form ceramic artworks before they are fired.
Carving: A subtractive process that forms an object by cutting or removing material from a solid mass. Carving removes material, whereas modeling can build form by adding and pressing it.
Coiling (pottery): A pottery technique that builds forms from long rolls of clay joined in successive courses. Coiling enlarges a form by adding pliable material piece by piece.
Plasticity (materials science): The ability of a material to undergo lasting deformation without breaking when force is applied. Plasticity explains why modeling can change a material’s shape without it springing back.
Pottery: Vessels and other objects made by shaping clay and hardening it, usually through firing. Modeling creates pottery forms by hand before drying and firing.
Casting: A process that forms an object by pouring or forcing material into a mold and letting it set. Casting takes shape from a mold rather than direct reshaping by hand.
Slab construction: A ceramic hand-building technique that joins flattened sheets of clay into a form. Slab construction reshapes clay by cutting, bending, and joining broad sheets.
Workability: The ease with which a material can be shaped, handled, or processed without losing desired qualities. Workability governs how readily a material responds to modeling techniques.
