Moeritherium

Moeritherium is an extinct genus of small proboscideans from North Africa, known from the late Eocene and early Oligocene. Its low-slung body and aquatic adaptations distinguish it from later elephants.

Proboscidea: The mammalian order that includes elephants and their extinct relatives. Moeritherium belongs to this order, but predates the familiar elephant body plan.
Moeritherium lyonsi: A species of Moeritherium known from fossil deposits in Egypt. This named species anchors much of the genus’s description and anatomical study.
Fayum Depression: A low-lying region of northern Egypt rich in Eocene and Oligocene fossil deposits. Fossils from the Fayum provide key evidence for Moeritherium’s anatomy and environment.
Palaeomastodon: An extinct proboscidean genus from the late Eocene and early Oligocene of Africa. It lived near Moeritherium in time and provides a contrasting, more elephant-like proboscidean form.
Eocene: A geological epoch lasting from about 56 to 33.9 million years ago. Moeritherium first appears in the late part of this epoch.
Tusk: An elongated tooth that grows beyond an animal’s mouth and serves specialized functions. Moeritherium had enlarged incisors rather than the prominent tusks of later elephants.
Eocene–Oligocene transition: A major climate and ecosystem shift around 34 million years ago between two geological epochs. Moeritherium’s fossil record spans this boundary, when North African environments were changing.
Phiomia: An extinct proboscidean genus from Oligocene deposits in Egypt. Phiomia illustrates the diversity of African proboscideans that followed or overlapped Moeritherium.
Oligocene: A geological epoch lasting from about 33.9 to 23 million years ago. Some Moeritherium fossils date to this epoch, extending its record beyond the Eocene.
Molar: A cheek tooth specialized for crushing or grinding food. Its low-crowned molars help characterize Moeritherium’s feeding anatomy.
