Mohamed Morsi

Mohamed Morsi was an Egyptian politician and Muslim Brotherhood leader who served as Egypt’s president from 2012 until the military removed him in 2013.

Muslim Brotherhood: A transnational Islamist movement founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna. Morsi was a longtime member and became its presidential candidate after the 2011 uprising.
Supreme Council of the Armed Forces: The senior military council that governed Egypt after Hosni Mubarak’s removal in 2011. It constrained presidential authority and later announced Morsi’s removal.
Rabaa massacre: The August 2013 dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo, in which security forces killed hundreds of people. The crackdown followed Morsi’s removal and became a defining episode of the ensuing repression.
