Mohammad Zahir Shah

Mohammad Zahir Shah was Afghanistan’s last king, reigning from 1933 until his cousin Mohammad Daoud Khan overthrew the monarchy in 1973.

Mohammad Daoud Khan: Afghan prince and politician who led the 1973 coup that ended the monarchy and became president. His seizure of power ended Zahir Shah’s reign and established a republic.
Mohammad Nadir Shah: King of Afghanistan from 1929 until his assassination in 1933, and Zahir Shah’s father. His death brought his nineteen-year-old son to the throne.
Constitutional monarchy: A system in which a monarch serves as head of state under constitutional rules that limit or define royal powers. The 1964 constitution made this the formal structure of Zahir Shah’s later rule.
Bonn Agreement (2001): The 2001 accord that established an interim Afghan administration and a process for rebuilding state institutions after Taliban rule. It gave Zahir Shah a symbolic role in the political settlement that followed the Taliban’s removal.
Constitution of Afghanistan (1964): Afghanistan’s 1964 constitution established a constitutional monarchy, parliament, and expanded civil and political rights. Promulgated during Zahir Shah’s reign, it defined the decade’s experiment with parliamentary government.
Amanullah Khan: King of Afghanistan from 1919 to 1929, known for independence from British influence and sweeping reforms. His failed reform program and abdication preceded the dynasty that Zahir Shah inherited.
Loya jirga: A traditional Afghan assembly convened to deliberate on major national issues and, at times, approve constitutional changes. A loya jirga approved the 1964 constitution during Zahir Shah’s reign.
Emergency Loya Jirga (2002): An Afghan assembly convened in 2002 to choose a transitional administration and consider the country’s political future. Zahir Shah attended after returning from exile, but delegates did not restore the monarchy.
Republic of Afghanistan: The Afghan state established after the 1973 coup, ending the monarchy and initially governed by Mohammad Daoud Khan. It was the political order that replaced Zahir Shah’s kingdom.
Musahiban family: A branch of the Barakzai dynasty that supplied Afghanistan’s rulers from 1929 to 1978. Zahir Shah and the political patrons who governed during his early reign belonged to this royal family.
