Molar

A molar is a large tooth at the back of the mouth with a broad, ridged surface adapted for crushing and grinding food.

Tooth: A hard structure in the mouth used to bite, tear, or grind food. Molars are specialized members of this broader structure.
Incisor: A front tooth with a relatively thin edge adapted for cutting. Incisors cut food, while molars grind it at the back of the mouth.
Mastication: The process of chewing food with coordinated jaw movement and tooth contact. Molars perform much of the crushing and grinding during this process.
Dental caries: A disease in which acids produced by oral bacteria demineralize and damage tooth structure. The grooves on molars can trap food and make decay harder to clean.
Crown (tooth): The visible part of a tooth above the gum, covered by enamel. Its broad chewing surface forms the exposed top of a molar.
Canine tooth: A pointed tooth positioned between incisors and premolars, adapted for piercing and tearing. Its pointed shape contrasts with the molar's broad grinding surface.
Occlusion (dentistry): The contact relationship between the upper and lower teeth when the jaws close. Effective molar grinding depends on how opposing teeth meet.
Impacted wisdom tooth: A wisdom tooth that cannot erupt fully because of obstruction or insufficient space. Impaction commonly affects third molars at the back of the jaw.
Root (tooth): The part of a tooth anchored within the jawbone, usually beneath the gum. Molar roots anchor the tooth and may divide into several branches.
Premolar: A tooth between the canine and molars, usually with a broad crown suited to crushing and grinding. Premolars share some grinding work but sit in front of molars.
