Molecular beam epitaxy

Molecular beam epitaxy is a thin-film growth method that deposits atoms or molecules onto a heated crystalline substrate from controlled beams in high vacuum. Its slow, precisely controlled growth enables abrupt interfaces and atomic-layer thickness control.

Effusion cell: A heated vacuum source that emits a controlled beam of atoms or molecules from an evaporating material. Effusion cells provide the elemental beams whose flux sets each layer’s composition.
Quantum well: A thin region that confines charge carriers in one dimension, producing quantized energy states. MBE can grow well and barrier layers with thicknesses that tune carrier confinement.
Metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy: A semiconductor crystal-growth method that reacts metalorganic precursors in a flowing gas over a heated substrate. MOVPE offers higher throughput and larger-scale production, while MBE favors vacuum control and abrupt interfaces.
Crystal lattice: A repeating three-dimensional arrangement of atoms or molecules in a crystalline solid. The substrate lattice guides the arrangement of atoms deposited during epitaxial growth.
John R. Arthur: An American physicist whose studies of molecular beam epitaxy helped establish its surface science and growth principles. Arthur’s work explained how molecular beams interact with semiconductor surfaces during growth.
Reflection high-energy electron diffraction: A surface-sensitive electron diffraction method used to monitor crystalline growth in real time. RHEED oscillations can track layer-by-layer growth and reveal changes in surface structure.
Quantum cascade laser: A semiconductor laser that emits light through transitions between quantized states in repeated layered structures. Its precisely designed multilayers are commonly grown by molecular beam epitaxy.
Chemical vapor deposition: A thin-film process in which volatile precursors react or decompose to form a solid on a surface. CVD relies on chemical precursor reactions rather than directed elemental beams in ultrahigh vacuum.
Lattice matching: The degree of agreement between the lattice spacings of two materials joined at an interface. A small lattice mismatch can reduce strain and defects in an MBE-grown layer.
Alfred Y. Cho: An American physicist who developed molecular beam epitaxy as a practical method for growing semiconductor heterostructures. Cho helped turn MBE into a controllable technique for fabricating layered semiconductor materials.
