Molecular recognition

Molecular recognition is selective association between molecules through complementary chemical and structural features. It enables specific binding in systems ranging from enzymes and antibodies to synthetic receptors.

Noncovalent interactions: Attractive or repulsive interactions between molecules that do not involve forming covalent bonds. Hydrogen bonds, electrostatics, and dispersion forces collectively stabilize recognized molecular partners.
Molecular geometry: The three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule. Geometric complementarity determines whether binding surfaces can approach and align.
Enzyme–substrate complex: A transient association between an enzyme and the molecule on which it acts. Substrate recognition positions selected molecules for enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions.
Nonspecific binding: Association that lacks strong preference for a particular molecular partner or binding site. It contrasts with recognition by showing that molecular association need not discriminate among partners.
Protein–ligand docking: Computational prediction of how a small molecule may bind within a protein site. Docking tests whether modeled molecular complementarity can predict actual recognition and binding poses.
Hydrogen bond: An attraction between a hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom and another electronegative atom. Directional hydrogen bonds help distinguish binding partners with complementary donor and acceptor patterns.
Stereochemistry: The study of how the spatial arrangement of atoms affects molecular properties and reactions. Different stereoisomers can present distinct binding surfaces despite having the same atom connectivity.
Antigen–antibody interaction: Specific binding between an antibody and a molecular feature of an antigen. Antibodies recognize particular molecular surfaces, enabling immune detection and targeted binding.
Chemical reaction: A process that transforms chemical substances by rearranging bonds and atoms. Recognition can occur without chemical transformation, though it often positions partners for reactions.
Molecular dynamics: A computational method that simulates the time-dependent motion of atoms and molecules. Simulations can reveal changing shapes and transient contacts that static binding models miss.
