Molluscivory

Molluscivory is a feeding strategy in which animals eat mollusks, including snails, clams, mussels, and cephalopods.

Duropagous feeding: Duropagous feeding is the consumption of hard-shelled prey by animals that can crush or otherwise overcome its defenses. Molluscivory often involves the broader strategy of feeding on prey protected by hard shells.
Oystercatcher: Oystercatchers are shorebirds with strong bills that feed chiefly on intertidal invertebrates, including mollusks. Their bill techniques illustrate how a bird can open or dislodge shellfish.
Predator–prey interaction: A predator–prey interaction occurs when one organism captures and consumes another. Molluscivory is a specialized form of predator–prey interaction.
Insectivory: Insectivory is a feeding strategy in which animals eat insects. It targets insects rather than mollusks, despite sometimes involving similar prey-searching behaviors.
Crushing: Crushing is the application of compressive force to break a hard object. Predators such as crabs and fishes crack mollusk shells with forceful jaws or appendages.
Moon snail: Moon snails are predatory marine gastropods that drill through the shells of other mollusks. They are a classic example of a molluscivore that accesses prey by drilling.
Predator-induced defense: A predator-induced defense is a protective trait whose expression changes in response to predator cues. Mollusks can alter growth or shell form when exposed to molluscivores.
Piscivory: Piscivory is a feeding strategy in which animals eat fish. Fish-eating contrasts with molluscivory in prey type and often in prey capture.
Drilling predation: Drilling predation is the boring of a hole through prey tissue or a protective covering to gain access to food. Some molluscivores drill through shells instead of breaking them outright.
Walrus: The walrus is a large Arctic pinniped that feeds mainly on benthic invertebrates, especially bivalves. It locates shellfish on the seafloor and extracts their soft tissues.
