Monazite geochronology

Monazite geochronology dates geological events by measuring radioactive decay products in monazite, especially uranium–lead and thorium–lead isotope systems. Because monazite can grow or recrystallize during metamorphism, its ages can record specific stages of geological history.

Uranium–lead dating: A radiometric dating method that uses uranium isotopes decaying into lead isotopes. Uranium decay supplies one of monazite’s principal clocks.
Metamorphic petrology: The study of rocks transformed by changes in pressure, temperature, and fluid conditions. Monazite geochronology is especially useful for dating metamorphic rock histories.
