Möngke Khan

Möngke Khan was the fourth Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, ruling from 1251 until his death in 1259. His reign strengthened imperial administration and launched major campaigns in China and the Middle East.

Mongol Empire: A vast Eurasian empire founded by Genghis Khan and expanded by his successors. Möngke ruled this empire at its height, before succession disputes divided it.
Mongol imperial administration: The governing institutions and practices used to administer the Mongol Empire. Möngke used census-taking and fiscal oversight to strengthen the center.
Tolui: The youngest son of Genghis Khan and father of Möngke, Kublai, Hulagu, and Ariq Böke. Möngke inherited the Toluid family’s power and military following.
Kublai Khan: A Mongol ruler who became Great Khan and founded the Yuan dynasty in China. Möngke gave Kublai responsibility for governing and campaigning in northern China.
Siege of Baghdad: The 1258 Mongol capture and destruction of Baghdad, then the seat of the Abbasid caliphate. Möngke authorized the campaign that Hulagu led against Baghdad.
Mongol census of 1252–1259: A census ordered under Möngke to count people and assess resources across Mongol territories. It supplied information for taxation, military levies, and provincial administration.
Sorghaghtani Beki: A Kerait princess and influential Mongol noblewoman, wife of Tolui and mother of Möngke. Her political alliances helped her sons secure leadership within the empire.
William of Rubruck: A Flemish Franciscan missionary who traveled to the Mongol court in the 1250s. His account describes Möngke’s court and the religious debates held there.
Mongol conquest of the Song dynasty: The decades-long Mongol campaign that ended the Song dynasty and established Yuan rule in China. Möngke renewed the southern China campaign and died during its final phase.
Yuan dynasty: The dynasty founded in China by Kublai Khan, which ruled from 1271 to 1368. Möngke’s campaigns in China prepared the way for his brother Kublai’s later dynasty.
