Mongol campaigns in Central Asia

The Mongol invasions of the Khwarazmian Empire beginning in 1219, which devastated cities across Central Asia and brought the region under Mongol rule.

Siege of Otrar: The 1219 Mongol siege of Otrar, a Khwarazmian city whose governor had seized a Mongol trade caravan. The caravan killings at Otrar helped trigger the invasion.
Mongol–Khwarazmian relations: The diplomatic and commercial relationship between the Mongol Empire and the Khwarazmian Empire before their war. Trade and diplomacy preceded the breakdown that led to invasion.
Muhammad II of Khwarazm: The Khwarazmian ruler whose empire was invaded by Genghis Khan’s forces in 1219. His divided defense and flight left the empire without coordinated leadership.
Chagatai Khanate: A Mongol successor khanate centered on parts of Central Asia and named for Chagatai, son of Genghis Khan. It institutionalized Mongol rule across much of the conquered region.
Arab conquest of Transoxiana: The seventh- and eighth-century expansion of Muslim rule into Transoxiana, the region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. It was an earlier conquest that also transformed Central Asian political and religious life.
Siege of Bukhara: The 1220 Mongol capture of Bukhara, a major religious and commercial center in Transoxiana. Its fall opened the way toward Samarkand and demonstrated Mongol siege methods.
Otrar Incident: The 1218 seizure of a Mongol trade caravan at Otrar and execution of its merchants by Khwarazmian authorities. Genghis Khan treated the incident as a grave breach requiring redress.
Jalal al-Din Mangburni: The last major Khwarazmian ruler, who continued resistance after his father’s empire collapsed. His retreat and later campaigns prolonged opposition to Mongol rule.
Destruction of Merv: The Mongol capture and destruction of Merv in 1221, one of the major urban catastrophes of the invasion. Merv’s devastation shows the scale of destruction inflicted on Khwarazmian cities.
Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus': The Mongol campaigns against the Rus' principalities in the 1230s and 1240s. It was a later western expansion, distinct from the destruction of Khwarazm.
