Mongol Empire

The Mongol Empire was a Eurasian empire founded by Genghis Khan in 1206 and expanded by his successors into the largest contiguous land empire in history.

Mongol military: The forces and military institutions used by Mongol rulers to conquer and defend territory. Mounted archers, disciplined units, and coordinated campaigns enabled rapid expansion.
Genghis Khan: The Mongol ruler who united rival steppe groups and founded the Mongol Empire in 1206. His unification of the Mongols created the political base for imperial expansion.
Mongols: A group of peoples originating in the Mongolian Plateau, historically linked by Mongolic languages and nomadic traditions. The empire took its name and ruling military core from Mongol peoples.
Pax Mongolica: A period of relative stability and connected exchange across much of Mongol-ruled Eurasia. Imperial security helped merchants, envoys, and technologies travel across long distances.
Jin dynasty: A Jurchen-led dynasty that ruled northern China from 1115 to 1234. Its wars with the Mongols preceded the conquest of northern China.
Mongol horse archery: A mounted combat method in which archers shoot bows while riding horses. Mobile archers gave Mongol armies range and speed across open terrain.
Mongol unification: The process by which Temüjin brought Mongol tribes under a single leadership before 1206. It transformed competing tribal alliances into an empire-building force.
Mongolian Plateau: A highland region of Inner Asia encompassing much of present-day Mongolia and adjoining areas. Its open grasslands supported the pastoral mobility central to Mongol power.
Silk Road: A network of trade routes linking East Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Mongol rule connected large stretches of the routes under a single political order.
Khwarazmian Empire: A Persianate state that ruled parts of Central Asia and Iran before Mongol conquest. Its destruction marked a decisive expansion of Mongol power into Central Asia.
