Mongol invasions of Japan

Two Mongol-led expeditions attacked Japan in 1274 and 1281 but failed to establish a lasting foothold. Japanese resistance, logistical difficulties, and storms contributed to their failure.

Battle of Bun'ei: The 1274 Mongol-led attack on Hakata Bay, repelled after fighting with Japanese defenders. This battle was the first invasion's main encounter with Japan's defenses.
Mongol Empire: A Eurasian empire founded by Genghis Khan in the early thirteenth century and expanded by his successors. The invasions were part of the empire's wider drive to secure submission and territory.
Hōjō Tokimune: The Hōjō regent who governed Japan during both Mongol invasions. He directed Japan's response and ordered preparations for the expected second attack.
Kamikaze: A Japanese term meaning “divine wind,” later associated with storms said to have saved Japan from invasion. The invasions helped establish the term's enduring association with national protection.
Mongol invasion of Java: A Yuan expedition to Java in 1293 that helped overthrow King Jayakatwang but was later expelled by Raden Wijaya. Like the Japan campaigns, it shows the difficulty of turning a distant naval expedition into durable control.
Battle of Kōan: The 1281 defense of Japan against a much larger Mongol-led invasion fleet. This campaign tested Japanese defenses against a second, larger expedition.
Kublai Khan: Mongol ruler who founded China's Yuan dynasty and ordered the expeditions against Japan. His attempts to obtain Japan's submission led to both invasions.
Hōjō Nagatoki: A Japanese military leader who served in the defense against the 1274 invasion. His forces took part in resisting the first Mongol-led landing.
Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba: An illustrated Japanese scroll depicting Takezaki Suenaga's service in the Mongol invasions. The scroll preserves a warrior's visual account of fighting and petitioning for rewards.
Mongol conquest of China: The prolonged Mongol military campaigns that brought China under Mongol rule in the thirteenth century. Unlike the failed expeditions to Japan, these campaigns achieved lasting territorial conquest.
