Mongolian Plateau

The Mongolian Plateau is a highland region of East Asia encompassing Mongolia and adjacent parts of northern China, including much of Inner Mongolia. Its landscapes range from grasslands and deserts to mountain ranges.

Inner Mongolia: An autonomous region of northern China that occupies a large part of the Mongolian Plateau. Its plateau landscapes form the region’s southern expanse within China.
Mongolian anticyclone: A winter high-pressure system that develops over Mongolia and Siberia, bringing cold, dry air. Its winter air masses help produce the plateau’s severe continental cold.
Nomadic pastoralism: A livelihood based on moving livestock between pastures as seasons and grazing conditions change. Mobile herding has long adapted to the plateau’s variable grass and water supply.
Tibetan Plateau: A vast high-altitude region in Central and East Asia centered on Tibet and adjoining areas. It lies southwest of the Mongolian Plateau and is substantially higher.
Mongolian-Manchurian steppe ecoregion: A temperate grassland ecological region spanning Mongolia and northeastern China. Its habitats support wildlife adapted to the plateau’s seasonal grasslands.
Mongolia: A landlocked country in East Asia situated between Russia and China. Most of the plateau’s northern and central areas lie within Mongolia.
Continental climate: A climate marked by large seasonal temperature ranges and limited maritime influence. The plateau’s inland position intensifies hot summers and very cold winters.
Mongolian horse: A small, hardy horse breed adapted to the harsh conditions of the Mongolian steppe. Horses support transport and herding across the plateau’s open terrain.
Manchuria: A historical geographic region of Northeast Asia, now largely within northeastern China and adjacent territories. It adjoins the plateau to the northeast across a transition from steppe to forest.
Przewalski's horse: A rare wild horse native to the steppes of Central and East Asia. Its history is tied to steppe habitats near the plateau and conservation efforts there.
