Mono no aware

Mono no aware is an aesthetic sensibility that finds poignancy in impermanence and the feelings it evokes. It attends to how beauty and sorrow arise from things passing away.

Impermanence: The condition of being subject to change and eventual ending. Mono no aware makes passing things emotionally vivid rather than treating change as an abstraction.
The Tale of Genji: An eleventh-century Japanese court novel attributed to Murasaki Shikibu. Its shifting romances and losses are a classic literary expression of mono no aware.
Motoori Norinaga: An eighteenth-century Japanese scholar known for his studies of classical literature and Shinto. He made mono no aware central to his interpretation of The Tale of Genji.
Buddhism: A religious and philosophical tradition based on the teachings attributed to the Buddha. Buddhist teachings on change inform the cultural background, but mono no aware is an aesthetic sensibility.
