Monody

Monody is solo singing with instrumental accompaniment, shaped to make words intelligible and melody expressive. The style emerged in Italy around 1600 and helped establish early Baroque opera and song.

Basso continuo: A Baroque practice in which a bass line and figured harmony guide sustained instrumental accompaniment. Its bass and chords support the solo voice without competing with the words.
Florentine Camerata: A group of scholars, musicians, and patrons in late sixteenth-century Florence who discussed music and ancient drama. Its members promoted solo song as a way to clarify dramatic words.
Early Baroque opera: The first operas, composed around 1600, used solo singing, continuo, and staged drama to revive ancient dramatic ideals. Monody supplied the solo vocal language through which these works delivered their stories.
Tonal harmony: A system of musical organization in which pitches and chords relate to a central tonal center. Continuo-supported monody helped normalize chordal progressions around a bass line.

Bel canto: A tradition of Italian vocal performance emphasizing vocal beauty, agility, and controlled technique. The exposed solo voice in monody helped make vocal technique a central compositional concern.
Figured bass: A notation system that places numbers beneath bass notes to indicate the harmonies an accompanist should play. These figures let continuo players realize the harmonies beneath a monodic melody.
Giulio Caccini: An Italian singer and composer known for early Baroque solo songs and vocal instruction. His songs and writings made monodic performance practice widely known.
