Monoecy

Monoecy is a reproductive condition in which one plant bears separate male and female flowers. It contrasts with dioecy, where male and female flowers occur on different plants.

Flower: A reproductive structure in flowering plants, typically containing organs that produce gametes or enable fertilization. Monoecy describes how male and female flowers are distributed across a plant.
Dioecy: A reproductive condition in which individual plants bear flowers or structures of only one sex. Unlike monoecy, dioecy places male and female flowers on separate plants.
Sex allocation: The distribution of reproductive resources among male and female functions in an organism. A monoecious plant allocates resources between its male and female flowers.
Maize: A cereal crop whose plants typically bear separate male tassels and female ears. Its tassels and ears are a clear, familiar example of monoecy.
Stamen: The pollen-producing reproductive organ of a flower, usually consisting of an anther and a filament. Stamens are the defining male organs of monoecious plants’ male flowers.
Hermaphroditism: A reproductive condition in which an individual has both male and female reproductive organs. Hermaphroditic flowers combine sexes within a flower rather than separating them.
Dichogamy: The separation in time of pollen release and stigma receptivity within a flower or plant. Timing differences can limit self-fertilization even when both flower sexes occur on one plant.
Cucumber: A cultivated vine that commonly bears separate male and female flowers on the same plant. Many cucumber varieties express monoecy, with flower sex affecting fruit production.
Carpel: The female reproductive organ of a flower, containing an ovary, style, and stigma, either separately or fused with others. Carpels characterize the female flowers borne alongside male flowers.
Gynomonoecy: A plant sexual system in which individual plants bear both female and bisexual flowers. This related system adds bisexual flowers to the female flowers of a monoecious plant.
