Monotheism

Monotheism is the belief that only one God exists. It contrasts with beliefs that recognize multiple gods or deny gods altogether.

Polytheism: Polytheism is the belief in multiple gods. It differs from monotheism by affirming more than one god.
God: God is the supreme or ultimate divine being in many religious and philosophical traditions. Monotheism makes a claim about the number and existence of beings understood as God.
Akhenaten: Akhenaten was an Egyptian pharaoh who promoted the exclusive worship of the solar deity Aten in the fourteenth century BCE. His religious reforms are an early prominent case often discussed in histories of monotheism.
Judaism: Judaism is the religious tradition of the Jewish people, grounded in covenant, Torah, and worship of one God. Its central confession of God’s oneness is expressed in the Shema.
Tawhid: Tawhid is the Islamic doctrine of God’s absolute oneness and uniqueness. It gives monotheism a precise theological form that excludes partners or divisions in God.
Atheism: Atheism is the lack of belief in gods or the belief that no gods exist. It rejects the existence of the God whose singular existence monotheism affirms.
Theism: Theism is belief in the existence of at least one God. Monotheism is a specific form of theism that limits the number of gods to one.
Atenism: Atenism was the Egyptian religious movement centered on the Aten, especially under Pharaoh Akhenaten. Its restrictions on other cults raise questions about whether it was monotheism or exclusive royal worship.
Christianity: Christianity is a religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, whom Christians regard as the Christ. It identifies as monotheistic while articulating God through the doctrine of the Trinity.
Trinity: The Trinity is the Christian doctrine that one God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It addresses how Christian monotheism understands three distinct persons without affirming three gods.
