Monstrous moonshine

Monstrous moonshine is a set of connections between the Monster group and the coefficients of the modular function j, including identities explained by a vertex operator algebra.

Moonshine module: An infinite-dimensional graded representation of the Monster group whose graded dimensions encode the coefficients of the normalized j-function. Its graded pieces make the first moonshine coefficient identities into representation dimensions.
Monster group: The largest sporadic simple group, with order about 8 × 10⁵³. Its irreducible representation dimensions supply the numbers compared with j.
John McKay: A mathematician whose observations connected the Monster group with coefficients of the j-function. His recognition of 196884 as 196883 + 1 launched the moonshine story.
Conformal field theory: A quantum field theory invariant under conformal transformations, especially useful in two dimensions. The moonshine module arises from a conformal field theory with Monster symmetry.
Automorphic form: A function with specified transformation laws under a discrete group acting on a symmetric space. Borcherds's proof placed moonshine within a broad theory of automorphic products.
McKay–Thompson series: A family of modular functions formed from graded traces of Monster elements on the moonshine module. These series extend the j-function relation from the identity element to every Monster element.
Sporadic group: A finite simple group that belongs to none of the infinite families of finite simple groups. The Monster is the largest and most intricate member of this exceptional collection.
John Horton Conway: A mathematician known for major contributions to group theory, combinatorics, and the study of the Monster. Conway and Norton formulated the broader conjectures behind monstrous moonshine.
Two-dimensional conformal field theory: A conformal field theory defined on a two-dimensional spacetime or surface. Its state space and partition function provide the physical setting for the moonshine module.
Generalized Kac–Moody algebra: A Lie algebra whose root system and multiplicities generalize those of Kac–Moody algebras. A Monster-symmetric generalized Kac–Moody algebra supplied the denominator identity used in the proof.
