Montage

Montage is a film-editing technique that combines a sequence of shots to create meaning, compress time, or suggest connections beyond any single shot.

Film editing: The process of selecting and arranging moving-image shots and sounds into a finished sequence. Montage is a distinctive way of arranging shots through editing.
Sergei Eisenstein: A Soviet film director and theorist known for developing influential theories of montage. His writings and films made montage a deliberate method for creating conflict and ideas.
Film shot: A continuous recorded segment of moving images, usually ending at a cut or other transition. Montage derives its structure from the selection and ordering of shots.
Odessa Steps sequence: A sequence in Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 film Battleship Potemkin depicting violence on the Odessa Steps. Its collision of faces, crowds, and objects turns a brief event into an extended dramatic sequence.
Long take: A film shot that continues for an unusually long duration without an internal cut. A long take sustains action within one shot where montage would divide it among several.
Continuity editing: An editing system that makes cuts preserve clear spatial, temporal, and narrative continuity. Montage often compresses or disrupts continuity rather than concealing every cut.
Lev Kuleshov: A Soviet filmmaker and teacher whose experiments explored how editing shapes cinematic meaning. His editing experiments showed how shot order changes viewers’ interpretations.
Cut (transition): An instantaneous transition from one shot to another in film or video. Cuts create the juxtapositions on which montage depends.
Rocky training montage: A sequence in the 1976 film Rocky showing Rocky Balboa training for a boxing match. It compresses a long training period into a sequence of brief, goal-oriented images.
Cross-cutting: An editing technique that alternates between events occurring in different places, often at the same time. Cross-cutting tracks parallel action, while montage can connect shots without implying simultaneous events.
