Montmartre

Montmartre is a hill and district in northern Paris, known for its artistic communities, village-like streets, and entertainment venues.

Sacré-Cœur Basilica: A Roman Catholic basilica on Montmartre’s summit, completed in 1914 and consecrated in 1919. Its white dome crowns the hill and defines Montmartre’s best-known skyline.
Montmartre Abbey: A Benedictine abbey founded on Montmartre in the twelfth century and dissolved during the French Revolution. The abbey shaped the hill’s religious landscape before the modern district emerged.
Pablo Picasso: A Spanish painter and sculptor who helped shape modern art and co-founded Cubism. He lived and worked in Montmartre during his early Paris years.
Pigalle: A Paris neighborhood at the foot of Montmartre, historically known for nightlife and entertainment. Its cabarets and nightlife overlap with Montmartre’s, but cluster lower on the hill.
Moulin Rouge: A cabaret in Paris founded in 1889, famous for its red windmill and can-can performances. Its nightlife made Montmartre synonymous with popular entertainment.
Commune of Montmartre: A local revolutionary movement formed in Montmartre in March 1871, before the Paris Commune took power. Its resistance to government troops helped spark the Paris Commune.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: A French post-impressionist painter and printmaker known for images of Parisian nightlife. His posters and paintings documented Montmartre’s cabarets and performers.
Belleville: A hilly Paris neighborhood with a working-class history and a long record of immigration. Like Montmartre, it has a village past, but a different social and cultural identity.
Place du Tertre: A square in Montmartre known for its outdoor portraitists and artists’ stalls. Its artists continue the district’s public association with painting.
Paris Commune: A revolutionary municipal government that ruled Paris from March to May 1871. Montmartre’s cannons and uprising made it a starting point of the revolt.
