Mooré

Mooré is a Gur language spoken chiefly by the Mossi people of Burkina Faso. It is one of the country’s major national languages.

Gur languages: A branch of the Niger-Congo language family spoken across parts of West Africa. Mooré belongs to this language branch.
Burkina Faso: A landlocked country in West Africa whose largest population group is the Mossi. The country is Mooré’s principal geographic setting.
Mossi Kingdom: A precolonial West African polity formed by Mossi states in the region of present-day Burkina Faso. Its history is closely tied to the communities that made Mooré prominent.
Dioula: A Manding language widely used as a lingua franca in Burkina Faso and neighboring West African countries. Its wider interethnic use contrasts with Mooré’s strong association with Mossi communities.
