Moral injury

Moral injury is persistent psychological, social, or spiritual distress after actions or events violate deeply held moral beliefs. It can affect people who commit, witness, or are betrayed by such acts.

Moral transgression: An act that violates a moral rule or deeply held ethical belief. Perceived transgression is one route into the guilt and shame associated with moral injury.
Moral injury in veterans: Moral injury experienced by military veterans after actions, omissions, or betrayals connected to service. Military service provides a prominent setting for studying morally injurious events and their aftermath.
