Moral Rights

Moral rights protect an author's personal connection to a work, commonly through attribution and protection against certain distortions or mutilations. Their scope and duration vary by jurisdiction.

Copyright: A body of law granting creators and rights holders exclusive control over specified uses of original works. Moral rights are part of copyright law but protect personal interests distinct from economic control.
Berne Convention: An international treaty establishing minimum standards for copyright protection among member countries. Article 6bis sets an international baseline for attribution and integrity rights.
Authorship credit: Recognition in a work or its presentation of the person responsible for creating it. Attribution disputes arise when a creator is omitted, misidentified, or credited against their wishes.
Droit d'auteur: The French tradition of authors' rights, encompassing both personal and economic interests in creative works. Its personal-rights framework strongly influenced modern ideas of moral rights.
Authorship: The creation or origin of a work attributable to one or more creators. Moral rights commonly attach to a creator because of their authorship.

Art conservation: The care and treatment of artworks to preserve their material condition and cultural significance. Conservation choices can raise integrity concerns when treatment changes an artwork's appearance.
Work made for hire: A legal doctrine under which an employer or commissioning party is treated as the author for copyright purposes in specified circumstances. It can complicate claims based on an individual creator's personal bond with a work.
Attribution: The acknowledgment of a work's creator or source. The right of attribution protects an author's claim to be identified with their work.
French copyright law: French law governing authors' rights in literary, artistic, and other protected works. French law treats moral rights as especially enduring and generally inalienable.
