Mormonism

Mormonism is a Christian religious tradition that began with Joseph Smith’s teachings and the Book of Mormon. It encompasses the Latter Day Saint movement and its diverse churches.

Book of Mormon: A scripture published by Joseph Smith in 1830, presented as an ancient record translated by divine power. Its publication established the tradition’s foundational narrative and gave it its name.
Second Great Awakening: A wave of Protestant revivalism and social reform in the United States from the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. Its religious ferment formed the setting for Smith’s claims and early converts.
Latter-day Saint priesthood: The ecclesiastical authority and power to perform religious ordinances in many Latter Day Saint churches. Priesthood offices organize leadership and authorized religious service.
Community of Christ: A Christian denomination descended from the Latter Day Saint movement, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It follows a distinct succession and theology from the largest Utah-based church.
Mormon Trail: The route followed by Latter Day Saint migrants traveling west from the United States to the Great Salt Lake Valley in the 1840s and 1850s. The migration established the movement’s major western center.
Joseph Smith: The American religious leader who founded the Latter Day Saint movement in the 1820s. His teachings and reported revelations initiated Mormonism.
First Vision: Joseph Smith’s account of a vision of God and Jesus Christ in western New York, traditionally dated to 1820. The vision became a foundational account of Mormonism’s beginnings.
Baptism for the dead: A proxy baptism performed for a deceased person in certain Latter Day Saint churches. This distinctive temple ordinance expresses a continuing concern with salvation for the dead.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: The largest church in the Latter Day Saint movement, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the largest institution commonly associated with Mormonism, but does not represent every branch.
Utah War: An 1857–1858 armed confrontation between the United States government and the Utah territorial government led by Brigham Young. It exposed the political tensions surrounding the church’s western settlement.
