Morphophonology

Morphophonology studies how morphological structure interacts with phonological patterns, especially sound alternations associated with morphemes and their combinations.

Allomorphy: The occurrence of different forms of a morpheme in different contexts. Morphophonological patterns often explain why one morpheme has multiple pronunciations.
Morpheme: The smallest linguistic unit conventionally associated with meaning or grammatical function. Morphophonological patterns track how morphemes change when combined.
English plural: The grammatical category marking more than one entity in English nouns. Its suffix has pronunciations conditioned by the final sound of the noun stem.
Morphology–phonology interface: The domain of interaction between word structure and sound systems in language. This broader interface includes morphophonology alongside other cross-level interactions.
