Mortimer Wheeler

Mortimer Wheeler (1890–1976) was a British archaeologist and broadcaster known for excavations in Britain, India, and Pakistan and for promoting systematic archaeological methods.

Maiden Castle: An Iron Age hillfort in Dorset excavated extensively by Mortimer Wheeler in the 1930s. Wheeler’s excavation made this hillfort a defining example of his public-facing archaeological work.
Wheeler–Kenyon method: An excavation method that leaves balks between square trenches to expose stratigraphic sequences in section. Wheeler developed and promoted this grid-based approach to control excavation and document layers.
Kathleen Kenyon: A British archaeologist known for stratigraphic excavations at Jericho and other Near Eastern sites. Kenyon refined the grid method associated with Wheeler and gave it wider methodological influence.
