Mos maiorum

Mos maiorum was the inherited body of customs, norms, and precedents that guided Roman social, political, and religious life. It carried authority through ancestral practice rather than a single written code.

Auctoritas: Auctoritas was the prestige and recognized influence that made a person’s advice carry weight in Roman public life. Ancestral precedent gained force when respected leaders invoked it.
Paterfamilias: A paterfamilias was the male head of a Roman household who held legal authority over its members and property. His household authority embodied inherited expectations of family leadership.
Roman Kingdom: The Roman Kingdom was the early period of Roman history traditionally dated from the city’s foundation to the establishment of the Republic. Later Romans traced many institutions and rites to this partly legendary early era.
Roman law: Roman law was the body of legal rules, procedures, and institutions that governed Roman communities. Customary authority overlapped with law but was not itself a single codified legal system.
Roman Senate: The Roman Senate was an assembly of elite members that advised magistrates and shaped policy across the Republic and Empire. Senators cited customary precedent when advising magistrates and defending established practice.
Pietas: Pietas was the Roman virtue of fulfilling obligations to family, gods, community, and country. It names a central duty that ancestral norms demanded across private and public life.
Roman Republic: The Roman Republic was the period of Roman government before the establishment of imperial rule under Augustus. Republican politics repeatedly negotiated which inherited practices remained authoritative.
Twelve Tables: The Twelve Tables were Rome’s earliest publicly displayed written laws, traditionally dated to the mid-fifth century BCE. Their written form contrasts with authority grounded in inherited practice.
Roman patronage: Roman patronage was a reciprocal relationship in which patrons provided protection or resources and clients returned loyalty and services. Reciprocal obligations translated inherited social norms into everyday ties.
Gravitas: Gravitas was the Roman ideal of seriousness, dignity, and self-command in conduct. It describes the comportment expected of those who upheld traditional authority.
