Moscow Canal

The Moscow Canal is a 128-kilometer waterway linking the Moskva River in Moscow with the Volga near Dubna. Completed in 1937, it supplies water to Moscow and connects the city to Russia’s inland waterway network.

Canal lock: A gated chamber that raises or lowers boats between stretches of water at different elevations. A sequence of locks carries vessels across the canal’s changes in elevation.
Moscow Canal construction: The 1932–1937 Soviet project that built the waterway between Moscow and the Volga. This project created the canal and its associated hydraulic infrastructure.
Moscow Canal water transfer: The movement of water from the Volga basin through the canal into the Moskva River system. This transfer helped address Moscow’s growing demand for water.
Northern River Terminal: A monumental passenger terminal in Moscow built beside the Khimki Reservoir in 1937. It served as Moscow’s ceremonial gateway to the canal and northern waterways.

Ivankovo Reservoir: A reservoir on the Volga formed by the Ivankovo Dam, near the canal’s northern connection. It supplies the Volga water that enters the canal near Dubna.
Dmitlag: A Soviet forced-labor camp administration established to build the Moscow Canal. Dmitlag organized the prisoners compelled to excavate and construct the canal.
Moscow Water Ring: A system of waterways and reservoirs that connects Moscow with the Volga and other rivers. The canal became the principal northern link in this regional waterway network.
Khimki Reservoir: A reservoir on the Moscow Canal at the northwestern edge of Moscow. Its shoreline brings canal navigation and the capital’s urban landscape together.
Moskva River pollution: The contamination of the Moskva River by municipal, industrial, and other pollutants. Water transferred through the canal enters a river facing persistent pollution pressures.
