Mosquito control

Mosquito control comprises methods for reducing mosquito populations and limiting their nuisance or transmission of disease. It combines habitat management, biological and chemical interventions, and personal protection.

Source reduction: Eliminating or modifying water-holding sites where mosquitoes lay eggs and larvae develop. Removing breeding water prevents new mosquitoes from emerging before insecticides are needed.
Malaria prevention: Measures that reduce malaria infection, including mosquito control, preventive medicines, diagnosis, and treatment. Vector control is a central way to reduce malaria transmission in endemic regions.

Adulticide: A pesticide used to kill adult insects, including mosquitoes. Adulticides can rapidly reduce biting populations, especially during outbreaks.
West Nile virus: A mosquito-borne virus that can cause neurological disease in humans and other animals. Many programs intensify adult mosquito control when surveillance signals elevated West Nile risk.
