Mosquito

Mosquitoes are slender, long-legged flies whose females use piercing mouthparts to take blood meals. They are distinguished from other flies by their scaled wings and long proboscis.

Mosquito life cycle: The sequence of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages in a mosquito’s development. Aquatic immature stages produce the flying adults that seek hosts and breeding sites.
Insecticide-treated bed net: A bed net treated with insecticide to reduce contact with biting mosquitoes. It blocks night-biting mosquitoes and can kill those that land on the net.
Malaria: A parasitic disease caused by Plasmodium species and transmitted to people by infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit the parasites during blood feeding.
Crane fly: A long-legged fly in the family Tipulidae, whose adults do not take blood meals. Its resemblance to a large mosquito masks a different body and feeding biology.
Mosquito proboscis: A mosquito’s elongated mouthpart assembly, used by females to pierce skin and take fluids. Its specialized components pierce tissue and draw blood during feeding.
Indoor residual spraying: The application of insecticide to indoor surfaces where disease vectors rest. It targets mosquitoes that enter homes and rest on treated walls.
Dengue fever: A viral disease transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, causing fever and sometimes severe complications. Aedes mosquitoes can pass dengue viruses between human hosts.
Midge: A small fly belonging to one of several families, some of whose females take blood meals. Biting midges also attack hosts but are not mosquitoes and belong to different fly families.
Mosquito olfaction: The detection and processing of odor cues by mosquitoes. Carbon dioxide and human odors help females locate potential blood hosts.
Larvicide: A substance used to kill insect larvae, including mosquito larvae in water. Treating breeding water can reduce adult mosquitoes before they emerge.
